Suresh Kumar, was full of fear and desperately looking for a way to save his life when he contacted VIMS. His own heart terrified him, and he wanted a replacement for that. This patient from Vijayawada, diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy, consulted the Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (VIMS) for a heart transplant surgery as his last hope. After a thorough examination, Dr Durgaprasad Reddy advised that heart transplantation was Suresh Kumar’s only chance to survive. A minimum of 50% of heart performance is required in adults, but in Suresh Kumar’s case, it was less than 20%, and this was another terrifying aspect facing Suresh Kumar’s family.
One phone call from VIMS on the 12th of July 2022 announcing the availability of a healthy heart suitable for Suresh Kumar brought in a ray of hope. He immediately flew to Bengaluru, and in the hands of Dr. Durgaprasad Reddy’s highly qualified and efficient team, Suresh Kumar grew more confident.
The real challenge, however, was to get the heart within the minimal clamp time because with the increase in the time, the chance for a positive outcome decreases. On the 13th of July 2022, the donated heart reached VIMS hospital within a matter of 12 minutes. The credit for achieving this minimal clamp time goes to the VIMS ambulance driver who covered 13km of distance in such a short interval of time. It was a proud moment for VIMS Hospital, Dr. Durgaprasad Reddy, and his team when the patient’s body accepted the new heart, and achieved yet another successful heart transplantation. The key to this achievement is the flawless teamwork of the Cardiology department combined with the quick and alert action of the healthcare and non-healthcare faculty of VIMS. Along with a few organizations, VIMS too provided financial assistance to the patient’s family.
This is the seventh transplant surgery at VIMS, and today the patient is healthy. According to Dr. Durgaprasad Reddy, the days after the surgery matters a lot for the speedy recovery. Self-hygiene, clean surroundings, nutritious, clean, and healthy food is a must as the body is sensitive; infections, gastrointestinal issues, etc. can disrupt the recovery rate.
Vydehi Hospital has always stood firmly supportive in efforts to create organ donation awareness and encourages society to donate organs. Every successful organ transplant is a victory of medical advancement as it is a hope and provides a renewed chance at living to those counting their last days of life. Be the hand of destiny to improve and enhance the quality of another life with organ donation.
A new heart, for the new life…
