This study is known to be one of the largest surveys about athlete oral health.
A dental college in London carried out this comprehensive study that involved around 350 athletes, males as well as females from professional sports as well as Olympics to find out whether dental or oral health actually hindered the performance of these athletes. The studied participants were in the mean age group of 25 years and 67% of them were male.
The revelations were startling as around 49.5% of them were subject to tooth decay that was left untreated. 77% of them were found having swelled up gums. Around 32% of them did bring up that dental health issues impacted their performance. Having said that, the study also revealed that over 95% of these athletes brushed their teeth two times a day while around 40% flossed once during the day.
Taking into account their oral habits, their poor health scenario could be due to diet issues and activities they do. One of the major factors affecting the health of an athlete is stress. There have been incidences of players vomiting before a race due to competition anxiety. Another is training as well as performance.
