The Department of Respiratory Medicine in Vydehi hospital has a team of committed and caring specialists who practice evidence-based medicine with holistic approach to lung disorders.

From the past 2 decades, the Department of Respiratory Medicine has been involved in the management of acute and chronic respiratory diseases like bronchial asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), bronchiectasis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, interstitial lung diseases, sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnoea, smoking cessation, pulmonary rehabilitation, occupational lung diseases, diagnosis of lung cancer etc.

The Department of Respiratory Medicine is one of the most efficient centre providing specialised services in In-patient and Out-patient setting including bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, pulmonary rehabilitation and sleep study (polysomnography).

OPD Services

We function in OPD daily

  • Monday-Friday : 9am to 4pm
  • Saturday: 9am to 1pm

We examine and treat patients who have any of the following complaints: cough, sputum (phlegm) production, difficulty in breathing (breathlessness), wheezing, blood in phlegm, chest pain, chest tightness, weight loss, etc.

A. Various diseases diagnosed and treated in our Department
  • Infections:
    1.common cold
    2.Sore throat
    3.Bronchitis
    4.Pneumonia
  • Tuberculosis ( T.B)
  • Screening for T.B
  • Complications of T.B: Destroyed (scarred lung, bronchitis)
  • Allergy: Br. Asthma(running nose, sneezing, blocked nose)
  • Eosinophilic lung disease: Eosinophilia
  • Screening for smoking related lung disease
  • Smoking related lung diseases: COPD (Bronchitis)
  • Pollution related lung disease
  • Occupational related lung Disease:
    1.Air cooler/ Air Condition,
    2.Dust – Construction site
    3.Garment Factory
    4.Mines
    5.Factory – exposure to dust, fumes, smoke
    6.Poultry
    7.Farming, etc
  • Sleep related breathing problems (snoring)
  • Screening for lung cancer
  • Obesity related breathing problem
  • Stress related breathing problem
B. We give acute care (emergency) in severe/serious breathlessness, cough etc. i.e. severe asthma, severe bronchitis, respiratory failure (lung failure) etc.
C. Where-ever necessary we provide ICU care.
D. We assess the functional status of respiratory system (breathing capacity) in:
  • Pre- employment
  • Pre – surgery/operation
  • In various diseases
  • In smokers
  • As general check up
E. Free availability of test i.e. sputum (phlehm) for diagnosis and follow up in lung T.B by specially trained technician Free availability of medicines for T.B for full course 6-8 months
F. We teach breathing exercises, physiotherapy for lungs where-ever necessary

  • Spirometry(PFT)
  • Diffusing capacity measurements by CO diffusion(DLCO)
4. Bronchoscopy services:
  • Diagnostic bronchoscopy
  • Broncho-alveolar lavage(BAL)
  • Endobronchial biopsy(EBB)
  • Trans-bronchial lung biopsy(TBLB)
  • Transbronchial Needle Aspiration(TBNA)
  • Rigid bronchoscopy and biopsy
5. Thoracoscopy services :
  • Thoracoscopic biopsy
6. Pleural procedures:
  • Pleural fluid aspiration
  • Intercostal drainage facility
  • Pleurodesis
7. Radiological Interventions:
  • Chest (USG) sonography & guided procedures
  • CT Guided lung biopsy
  • CT Guided pleural biopsy
  • Bronchial Artery Embolization(BAE)
8. Exercise testing & Rehabilitation:
  • 6 minute walk test
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation programme
9. Full Fledged Sleep lab:
  • Level 1—Polysomnography(Sleep study)
  • Level 3- Polysomnography (Sleep study)
  • Titration  study
10. NTEP (National Tuberculosis Elimination Program)
  • Diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis including MDR- TB services
