The Department of Surgical Oncology performs all significant cancer surgeries and associated reconstructions. Experienced cancer surgeons, backed by Avant-garde equipment and the best infrastructure, have operated an extensive and complex range of cancer surgeries.

Types of Oncology Surgery Services

Head and Neck Surgeries – Dedicated microvascular reconstruction program

Head and neck surgeries account for nearly 30% of the surgeries performed at VIMS & RC. Our trained doctors perform all kinds of oncological surgeries, including:

  • Oral, oropharyngeal, laryngeal and hypopharyngeal surgeries for head and neck cancers
  • Laryngeal conservation procedures
  • All varieties of neck dissections
  • Thyroid, parathyroid and parotid surgeries
  • Advanced microvascular reconstructions by a specialized plastic surgery team.
Abdominal and Thoracic Surgeries

It accounts for around 25% of the oncological surgeries performed here.

  • Our surgeons regularly conduct oesophageal cancer surgeries. Among that, Transthoracic-VATS mobilized esophagectomy is the most common surgery, followed by Ivor-lewis oesophagus gastrectomy. Of late, we have been performing many nodal dissections as part of oesophageal resections.
  • We operate around 1-2 major lung resections per month, which usually involve lobectomies.
  • Gastric and colonic surgeries are common. We perform anastomosis with stapling techniques and laparoscopic surgeries.
  • Whipple’s pancreatic duodenectomy- is another frequently performed procedure, and we have an excellent safety record of this procedure.
Breast Surgeries

Oncological breast surgeries account for the next 30% of the surgeries. Our well-versed surgeons perform.

Indoor Facilities in Surgical Oncology
Wards

The Surgical Oncology department is part of the six floors Oncology block existing at Vydehi Institute of Medical science. It has 60 beds segregated into female and male wards. The wards are manned by trained surgical oncology nurses who provide high-end nursing care to patients who undergo complex cancer surgeries.

Intensive care

The surgical oncology department has a dedicated 6 bedded intensive care with all ventilatory and monitoring support. This helps in immediate care following prolonged and critical cancer surgeries.

Operation theatre

The department has a separate major operation theatre with HEPA filters and a laminar flow facility. It also has advanced monitors to aid in prolonged surgery performance. There are dedicated anaesthetists for oncology surgeries. There is also a minor operation theatre and a flexible scope suite.

Advanced surgical oncology equipment

To aid the surgeons in performing high-end surgeries, the surgical oncology OT has modern surgical aids. A few worth mentioning are vessel sealing devices, disposable staplers, high-end laparoscopy equipment, operating microscope for microvascular reconstructions, electromechanical units, etc. Recently, the department has been equipped with the HIPEC unit (heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy unit). HIPEC unit is present with only a few cancer centers in India.
