Orthodontics

The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics deals with the corrections of development and positional anomalies (irregularities) of the teeth and Jaws, which in turn improves the Oral Health, Changes facial appearance for better and boost the self esteem of an individual.
Early detection of Orthodontic problems is important in order to take corrective actions and avoid more difficult treatment later.

There are four basic treatment modalities that the Orthodontist can utilize either separately or in combination:

a. Repositioning of teeth through orthodontic tooth movement.
b. Redirection of facial growth through functional alteration.
c. Dentofacial Orthopaedics in which dentofacial growth is altered through the use of strong modifying forces
d. Surgical Orthodontic treatment

The treatment modality which is best for an individual patient is determined by the nature and degree of disparity in the tooth and jaw relationship. In general a greater range of discrepancy can be corrected by orthodontics alone or a combination of Orthodontics/Functional/Surgical treatment.
Timing of treatment is another important factor in Orthodontics. The Orthodontic range is about the same in Children and as in adults. At one time orthodontic treatment was limited to the adolescent age group, but today, with the development of newer techniques and better understanding of the biologic basis of tooth movement, the age upto which Orthodontic treatment is considered possible has increased considerably. Today more and more adult patient are visiting Orthodontics Clinics to obtain optimal aesthetics and occlusal rehabilitation.

Orthodontics has become a more prominent part of dentistry in recent years and this trend is likely to continue. The vast majority of individuals who undergo orthodontic treatment feel that they are benefited from the treatment and are pleased with the result. Not all patients have the dramatic changes in dental and facial appearance, but nearly all recognize an improvement in both dental condition and psychologic well-being.
