The slit lamp is a stereoscopic bio microscope that projects a concentrated beam of light with adjustable height, width, and angle. This versatile tool enables three-dimensional visualization and measurement of the detailed structures of the eye’s adnexa and anterior segment. With the use of handheld lenses, it is also possible to examine the posterior segment. A gonioscopic contact lens facilitates the observation of the iridocorneal angle. Consequently, the slit lamp is an essential component of a thorough eye examination, allowing ophthalmologists to assess every anatomical part of the eye. Our OPD is well equipped with 4 functioning OPD rooms with slit lamps attached.
A specular microscope is an advanced instrument designed to closely examine the corneal endothelium at high magnification. This high-resolution assessment allows for a detailed evaluation of the cornea’s health and structure. Such precise information is essential in determining the best surgical or therapeutic approach for individual patients, ensuring tailored and effective treatment plans. The Konan system further advances the field of specular microscopy by offering enhanced capabilities for a swift and accurate appraisal of corneal conditions. This system is particularly valuable for assessing the most challenging corneas, providing clinicians with critical insights that guide optimal patient care. Its ability to deliver rapid results without compromising accuracy makes it an indispensable tool in both routine preoperative and complex ophthalmologic evaluations. We have Cell Check D specular microscope available in our department.
It is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that renders an in vivo cross-sectional view of the anterior segment of eye and retina .It is used to evaluate for eye diseases. OCT can help diagnose and manage diseases of the retina, optic nerve, cornea and macular diseases like age-related macular degeneration, a part of the retina called the macula when is damage causes loss of central field of vision.
It is widely used to detect the damage to the optic nerve in glaucoma subjects. Visual field tests are useful for detection of central or peripheral retinal disease, eyelid conditions as ptosis or drooping, optic nerve disease, and diseases affecting the visual pathways within the brain. Indications for visual field testing include visual field deficits, vision loss, headache, and neurologic deficits. Patients with the above ocular conditions should undergo regular visual field testing to monitor progression.
The Ophthalmology Department at Vydehi Hospital offers a wide range of outpatient surgical and tertiary services for diseases of the eye and surrounding structures. The Department has faculty trained in the various sub-specialties and is setting up clinics in oculoplasty, cornea service, glaucoma service, Paediatric ophthalmology cataract service and retina service. The service is personal and patients can choose which doctor they would like to see. The service is provided at no cost to the socio-economically weak patients, along with paying patients who are also growing in number. We offer the following services:

Eye donation is donating your eyes after death to give sight to needy persons. Only cornea will be used for transplantation, not whole eyeball which will be harvested from a dead person. One person can give sight to two blind people.
In India, 12 million are blind and approximately 6.8 million are due to corneal blindness. Atleast 3 million can benefit by corneal transplantation, the most successful of all organ transplants. The need is around 1, 50,000 corneas per year. There is huge gap between requirement and supply.
Common causes are corneal injuries, malnutrition, infections, chemical burns, congenital disorders, post-operative complications.
Anyone, any age/ gender, spectacle users, Diabetics and Hypertensive can also donate eyes.
Those with Hepatitis, AIDS, Encephalitis, Rabies, Septicaemia, Retinoblastoma, Leukaemia, Lymphomas.
Eye donation is simple. It is only one phone call away. Call us at 080- 49069012 (eye donation helpline) or nearest Eye bank after death. Removal of eyes takes only 20 minutes. It does not delay funeral arrangements or disfigure the face. Eyes are removed within 6 hours after death. After legal heirs consent, the eyes are removed by trained doctor using sterile precautions, leaving no disfigurement of the face.
After donation, the donor’s family will receive a certificate of appreciation from the eye bank. Eyes are evaluated at the bank and only the ones deemed suitable are used for transplant and others are used for research and education. Recipients are notified on the first come first serve basis from the recipient registry. The recipient of cornea will always remain anonymous but donor family should be satisfied knowing that the eyes have been used to restore vision of two blind individuals.
The taboos are lack of awareness, fear of disfigurement, apathy or forgetfulness and lack of favorable legislations. Actually eye donation has no religious restrictions.
Eye bank is the link between the donor family and a cornea recipient. It is a community non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to restoring sight to those who are blind or visually impaired through the promotion and advancement of eye donation.
Functions of eye bank are to maintain the recipient list, to screen and evaluate donors eye, to eliminate waiting list and to promote eye donation awareness in the community.
Take care of your eyes. They are God’s gift to be passed on. Learn about eye donation. Pledge and register to donate your eyes at Vydehi eye bank, Bangalore affiliated with Eye bank of India. Encourage people around you to pledge for eye donation. Let eye donation become a tradition in your family. Donate eyes of your dearest after death.
Eye donors can register with the department and are required to undergo screening before registration and are provided with a donor card; their next of kin are requested to inform the Ophthalmology Department, Vydehi Hospital when the donors are deceased in order to facilitate immediate eye collection.

Radiography and Fluoroscopy use X-ray technology to diagnose disease and injury inside the body. Radiography is used to examine the chest, abdomen, skull and long bones. A specialized X-ray machine with fluoroscopy is used to conduct barium examinations of GI tract & iodine examinations of the genito-urinary system which include cystourethrogram (MCU, RGU), Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) and Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). All these radiographic and fluoroscopy procedures are routinely done in our hospital.
Ultrasonography uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image. This technique does not involve ionizing radiation and is very safe for pregnant women and young children. Since images are obtained in real time, our radiologists can obtain detailed examination of both structure and function. Common examinations include evaluation of abdominal organs, neck, breast, musculoskeletal structures, male and female pelvis, antenatal scans, new-born brain, blood vessels, lungs and heart. Advanced 3D ultrasound is used in fetal imaging, where in depth information of the baby’s well-being helps to detect anomalies with high precision. Doppler ultrasound is used to assess the motion of blood within the vessels which aids in diagnosis of a wide range of vascular pathologies.
Mammography is a low-dose X-ray procedure used to produce the digital image of the breast. Mammogram can identify breast cancer long before it can be detected by a physical examination. In addition, high resolution sono-mammography is also routinely performed, which are useful for detection of very small cancers especially in younger and high-risk women. In Vydehi Hospital, we have state of art most advanced equipment with Tomosynthesis and Stereotactic Biopsy. We encourage all women to begin regular mammography screenings starting at age 40 whilst high risk group may be advised to begin at a younger age.
Computerized Tomography (CT) provides clear three-dimensional images of body organs and their structure. Due to the high resolution, images are clearer than conventional X-rays. The CT scans can help doctors to make an early and accurate diagnosis. While undergoing a CT scan you are required to lie still on the CT couch for a short period of time which will be moved in and out through a CT gantry. You may require an oral and / or intravenous contrast agent to enhance quality of the images. Intravenous contrast agents are iodine based that may make you feel warm for some time. At Vydehi Hospital, all routine CT scans are done with 128 slice scanners. Siemens Definition AS 128 slice spiral CT scanner is a state of art multi detector CT (MDCT) scanner which generates 128 slices in less than a second. As a result of the fast scanning & high tube capacity, very thin sections of high resolution images can be obtained quickly. CT coronary angiography, the technique for scanning of blood supply to the heart in an accurate and non-invasive manner is frequently performed in our hospital. Other CT angiography studies of brain, neck, abdomen, upper & lower limbs, musculoskeletal 3D CT studies, virtual bronchoscopy, virtual colonoscopy, multiphasic abdominal CT & CT perfusion studies are also done with precise image definition. With our high-speed scanners, routine CT studies are done with very high resolution in light speed making it ideal for very sick patients, polytrauma patients, elderly and infants or young children. The data can be transmitted in a CD for digital storage & archiving.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a highly advanced, painless, non-invasive test that creates excellent high-resolution images of the internal structures and organs of your body. It is primarily used in medical imaging to demonstrate pathological or other physiological alterations within the organs. At Vydehi Hospital, we have Siemens MAGNETRON SEMPRA 1.5T MRI equipment which gives us tremendous diagnostic capabilities. This state of art equipment has commendable speed and near to nil audible noise which is more comfortable and convenient for claustrophobic patients. Our areas of expertise are Cardiac MRI, Neuroradiology (Head, Neck and Spine), MR spectroscopy, MR perfusion imaging, and Musculoskeletal, Pelvic and Abdominal MRI examinations.
Interventional radiology is a medical specialization that involves performing a range of imaging procedures. Interventional radiologists provide distinct services in advanced procedures such as treating tumours, taking organ biopsies or placing stents by inserting tiny instruments and thin plastic tubes (catheters) into the body via an artery or vein. The images are used to guide the catheters and instruments to the exact area where the procedure or treatment is to be performed. This reduces the need for traditional (open) or keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery as treatment can be given via a small plastic tube about the size of a straw.
Sub-unit of Interventional radiology in Vydehi performs the following wide range of procedures routinely:
The Department of Respiratory Medicine in Vydehi hospital has a team of committed and caring specialists who practice evidence-based medicine with holistic approach to lung disorders.
