General Medicine - VIMS-College

Department of General Medicine runs OPD services on all days of the week from 7.30 AM to 6.30 PM and on Sundays 9 AM to 1PM. We cater to all emergencies encompassing cardiac, respiratory , neurology, gastrointestinal and nephrology cases with adequate support from the respective superspeciality departments. We also specialize in management of all types of poisoning , drug overdoses, snake bites, scorpion sting, etc. We have a dedicated acute care unit for close monitoring of non ventillatory patients and robust critical care unit for ventillatory support. We have isolation units for catering to patients with infectious diseases and negative pressure respiratory unit for managing tuberculosis, Covid, H1N1 infections. All the services are given at subsidized rates . People from all parts of India frequent our hospital and make use of the facility with us.

We also run speciality clinics namely diabetes mellitus, Geriatrics, Rheumatology, haematology and adult vaccination clinics. Being a teaching hospital we conduct regular clinics and lectures for undergraduates and postgraduate students for MBBS and MD programmes as per mandatory curriculum of NMC.

(I) Interns shall acquire following training during their term.

Acquire competence for clinical diagnosis based on history, physical examination and relevant laboratory investigation and institute appropriate line of management;
This would include diseases common in tropics (parasitic, bacterial or viral infections, nutritional disorders, including dehydration and electrolyte disturbances) and system illnesses.

(II) The intern shall have assisted as a care team in intensive care of cardiac, respiratory, hepatic, neurological and metabolic emergencies.

(III) The intern shall be able to conduct the following laboratory investigations:

Blood:

(peripheral blood smear and blood groups);
Urine: (Routine and microscopic examination);
Stool: (for ova/cyst and occult blood);
Sputum and throat swab for gram stain or acid fast stain and
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) for smear for Gram stain and AFB stain.

(IV) Conduct following diagnostic procedures:

Urethral catheterisation
Proctoscopy
Ophthalmoscopy/Otoscopy
Indirect laryngoscopy
Insertion of Ryle’s Tube
Pleural tap, ascitic tap
Lumbar puncture and Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF) analysis

(V) Biopsy Procedures:

Liver biopsy, Kidney biopsy,
Skin biopsy, Nerve biopsy
Lymph node biopsy
Muscle biopsy
Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
Biopsy of Malignant lesions on surface
Nasal/nerve/skin smear for leprosy

(VI) Familiarity with usage of life saving procedures:

Endotracheal intubation and Mechanical ventilation
Defibrillators
Competence in interpretation of different monitoring devices such as cardiac monitor, blood gas analysis etc.

(VII) Participate as a team member in total health care of an individual including appropriate follow-up and social rehabilitation.

(VIII) Other competencies as indicated in general objectives.

Postgraduates:-

The postgraduate student will acquire knowledge , professionalism and skills related to the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting all systems in the adult and geriatric population.

The post graduate student will acquire the following skills:-
