Biochemistry

Department of Biochemistry at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre is involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting research and maintaining high standards in diagnostic services.

The department offers diagnostic services to all the clinical departments through its 24-hour central Diagnostic Laboratory (CDL). The CDL is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing & Calibration of Laboratories (NABL), and National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), New Delhi. The CDL is furnished with state-of-the-art equipment for analysis of blood, urine, Pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, Ascitic fluids drains and CSF samples. Approximately 5000 investigations are done every day.

The Department of Biochemistry has the facility to conduct specialized tests for hormones, tumour markers, vitamins, clinical toxicology and basic metabolic screening in labs that have the latest equipment’s.

Department of Biochemistry was established in the year 2002 as an undergraduate department with an intake of 100 admissions per academic year and upgraded to 150 in 2008 and in 2013 intake was further upgraded to 250. The department also upgraded to Post Graduate department in the year 2009 with an intake of two Post Graduates per year. Later in the year 2011 it was upgraded with two more additional PG MD seats with total intake of 04. In the year 2015 department has been approved for PhD admission. Till date, 14 MD candidates have successfully completed their course. We are proud to say in year 2015 & 2019 post graduate MD students of our department have secured highest marks in University Examination and were awarded with Gold Medal by RGUHS.

Department is also involved in teaching  Bachelor in Physiotherapy,  Allied health science courses- B.Sc. Perfusion Technology, Imaging Technology, Operation theatre  Technology, Anaesthesia Technology, Cardiac Care Technology and Renal Dialysis Technology and Post Graduate M.Sc. Radiation Physics. Department is also involved in collaborative teaching of Post graduate students of Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and clinical departments.

Department has well trained faculty with rich research experience in their respective interested area. Faculty is actively involved in research projects and completed projects are converted into publications and published in reputed indexed, peer reviewed Journals. During 2015-21, the faculty of Biochemistry department has contributed 42 publications in various international and national journals.

Department has well established Under Graduate and Post graduate Research laboratory. Post graduate research lab is well equipped with modern instruments and can accommodate Researchers to carry out their work. The basic research activity is carried out in the department; further research is done in collaboration with the adjacent departments. Biochemistry Laboratory is supporting to carry out various research activities of all the PG students and researchers of different specialties.
