Community Initiatives
The Community Medicine Department trains undergraduate and postgraduate students in the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The main goal of the Department of Community Medicine is to provide community-oriented healthcare education blended with research, leadership, and management, and thereby prepare medical students to function as community and primary care physicians.
The main values inculcated among the students are
To move towards the achievement of these goals, the department conducts many programs.
It provides undergraduate and postgraduate training. It offers health services at the Rural Health Training Centre and the Urban Health Training Centre situated at Kannamangala and Lakeside Hospital respectively.
Family Adoption Programme (FAP) is conducted as per NMC guidelines whereby undergraduate students are allotted families in the rural areas not covered under the PHC. Students are taken for regular visits to these families and are guided toward community-based healthcare by the faculty of Community Medicine. Also, diagnostic camps are conducted in these villages under FAP to address the health problems of the community.
Field visits are arranged to Anganwadi Centre, PHC, STP, TB treatment centre, and ICTC for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
It extends its health services through regular screenings, school health appraisals, outreach health education sessions on public health issues in the field practice areas and nearby communities, and participation in various National Health Programs and important Health Days.
The Department has to its credit excellent infrastructure, good facilities, a good research background coupled with trained and highly qualified manpower. The students who complete this course during their tenure at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Bengaluru, are placed to learn and practice primary health care at the Urban and Rural Health Centres in the field practice areas. During their internship period, the students work in various places like RHTC / UHTC / CHC and General Hospitals for the 12-week period.
Postgraduates are posted to the District Residency Programme for 3 months, where they get hands-on experience with public health activities. They are even posted to the Institute of Vector Control and Zoonosis, Hosur to get trained in Vector Control Management.
